Even in later years he seems to have remained strangely preoccupied with tensions in the family, tensions which as an ardent believer in the power of heredity he felt he had inherited, and which may well have left deep imprints on his psychic development. What the exact nature of the family difficulty was is not entirely clear. There are, however, indications that the problem involved the motherfather relationship and, more importantly, the relationship of each of the parents to the young boy.
