Inevitably, Garrick had to side with the majority of the jobless performers. He tried to appease Fleetwood by offering to cut £100 from his own salary if Macklin could be rehired; Fleetwood refused. Garrick offered to pay Macklin £3 a week; Macklin proudly spurned the offer. Pamphlet warefare ensued. Dr William Barrowby led a mob of Macklin's adherents, who pelted Garrick off the stage. Fleetwood and Garrick quelled a second attempt at intimidation by filling the pit with pugilists armed with clubs.
